Driver in court for stealing GH¢60,000 worth of underground cables

A driver and six others now at large were on Monday put before an Accra Circuit Court for stealing GH¢60,000 worth of underground cables at North Kaneshie in Accra.

Haruna Isshaiku and six others have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime to wit stealing, causing unlawful damage and stealing.

Isshaiku pleaded not guilty to the charges and the court has admitted him to bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties.

He is to reappear before the court chaired by Mrs. Patience Mills Tetteh, a High Court Judge sitting with additional responsibility as a Circuit Court Judge on February 25.

Prosecuting Inspector Isaac Dedoo said the complainant, Mr. Emmanuel Annan, is the Environment and Community Manager of Vodafone Ghana Limited while Isshaiku was in charge of Hyundai Truck with registration number GW 8319X.

Inspector Dedoo said on October 11, last year Isshaiku  and six others now at large went to North Kaneshie on the Hyundai truck and parked near a culvert  in front of the North Kaneshie branch of the Barclays Bank.

Prosecution said while Isshaiku waited in the vehicle, four stood close to the culvert and two of the accomplices in Vodafone uniforms entered the culvert.

According to prosecution, Isshaiku’s accomplices tied the underground cable to a nylon rope to the vehicle. Isshaiku started his engine and pulled the vehicle to about 100 meters away from the culvert while his accomplices kept watch.

Inspector Dedoo said a worker of Vodafone Ghana who had to use the ATM of Barclays Bank spotted the group loading the cable onto the truck and he confronted them to produce their Identity Cards because he knew his colleagues did not work at that time.

Sensing danger, six of them escaped leaving Isshaiku in the vehicle and he was arrested and sent to the Police Station.
