Ghana’s nominee for the Director General post of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Mr Alan Kyerematen has called for the revitalization of the Geneva-based organization.

According to Mr Kyerematen, the WTO is a great global asset that has contributed significantly to the improvement of the world economy.

The former Ghana Trade Minister made the call at a press conference January 29, 2013 in Geneva after meeting with the General Council of the WTO as part of processes for selecting a new WTO boss.

“It is the only organization that negotiates trade rules and settles disputes. I don’t think there is any replacement for this organization,” Mr Kyerematen told reporters on the importance of the WTO.

Mr Kyerematen further explains that the WTO is the only organization that presents a “firewall against protectionism” amidst global financial challenges.

He believes that the WTO can become the instrument of global economic recovery.
