Tema DOVVSU records 132 defilements in 2012

policeA total of 132 defilement cases were recorded by Tema Regional Office of Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of Ghana Police Service in 2012.

The figure comprised 69 cases from the Ashaiman Office, 14 each from New Town and Ada, Sakumono, eight, Prampram, seven, Tema Main, five and Community 11, three.

Superintendent Rebecca Nyamah, Tema Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, said the 132 defilement cases, formed part of the 1,409 total cases recorded by the Unit last year.

She said assault topped the list with 790 reports, while other cases included stealing, abduction, rape, threat of death, attempted suicide, child abuse and sodomy.

Supt Nyamah said out of the 1,409 total cases, 937 were from Ashaiman, 175 from Sakumono, 108 from Tema New Town and 59 from Ada.

He said Dodowa recorded 34 cases, while 31 came from Community 11, Prampram, 29, Tema Unit, 28 and Community Two eight cases.

She added that out of the 1,409 reported cases, 1,273 were found to be true, 136 were refused, 419 of the cases were closed while 781 are still under investigations.

Supt Nyamah said, last year, the Unit also recorded a total of 1,947 non-maintenance of family related matters not reported as criminal cases.

Out of the 1,947 cases, the Unit successfully  settled as many as 1,649, while referring 207 to the Family Tribunal, 85 to the Department of  Social Welfare, five to Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice and one to Federation of International Women Lawyers.
