Tamale metropolis to be decongested

street-hawkersThe Tamale Metropolis has outlined plans to decongest the Tamale Metropolis to drive away hawkers who have taken over some principal streets and drivers who park at unauthorized places.

Alhaji Abdulai Haruna Friday, the Caretaker Metropolitan Chief Executive of the Tamale Metropolis, said the Assembly had elaborate plans to deal with street hawking and unauthorized parking.

He disclosed this in Tamale on Tuesday during a press soiree to brief the media about his stewardship and forge a relationship with the media for the development of the area.

Alhaji Friday said a stakeholder meeting was going to be organized on Thursday to deliberate with stakeholders including the street hawkers and the drivers to sensitize them on the need for the Assembly to carry out the exercise.

On the performance over the past four years, he said the Assembly had contributed more than enough in educational, health and sanitation sub-sectors of the Metropolis stressing that the area though had some challenges with sanitation, it was still one of the best in the country.

Alhaji Friday said the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) within the four years had constructed not less than 360 different projects and created 32,000 jobs with the NYEP being the main instrument in job creation.

He expressed worry that some chiefs and some disgruntled ‘foot soldiers’ continue to make work difficult for the Assembly and appealed for collaboration from all to ensure the development of the area.

Members of the press posed some questions including the issue of the illegal collection of taxes at parkways and the Assembly admitted that was a situation that needed more attention to prevent such illegal practices.

Alhaji Shaehu Kadiri, the Tamale Metro Director, said the Assembly had identified the media as the major ally in development and was grateful to have worked positively with the media over the years saying ‘the media is a partner in development’.

He urged the media to project positive aspect of the assembly and alert the TMA of any negative developments.
