11 suspected criminals arrested in Kumasi
Eleven suspected hardened criminals, believed to have carried out a string of robberies in the Kumasi Metropolis, have been arrested and are being held by the police.
They were picked up from their hideouts in separate police operations during the weekend and on Monday morning.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Augustine Gyening, Ashanti Regional Commander, told a press briefing that three of the suspects including Kwasi Ayaga, alias “Adembe” a convicted robber, who was serving a 50-year jail term for robbery and rape, but released on appeal, were arrested following a tip off.
Together with Francis Asindo, Lovis Owusu, and one Rocky, now on the run, they had killed a taxi driver, Kofi Adu, on November 21, last year.
They had engaged the driver to carry them in his vehicle and midway through the journey, stabbed him to death and dumped the body in a bush at IPT, Asuoyeboa.
In their bid to escape with the taxi, they ran into a ditch and had to abandon the car.
DCOP Gyening said Ayaga had already confessed to the crime and other robberies including that of another taxi driver, Victor Addai, as well as a warehouse break-in, where lorry tyres worth GH¢1,800.00 were stolen.
He was arrested in the tyres theft, put on trial and granted court bail but went into hiding.
The Police Commander said two others, Kofi Owusu alias “Kofi Isaac” also an ex-convict, and John Obeng Asare had also snatched a taxi from the driver and were nabbed just as they were about to sell it.
Two of the suspects, Mustapha Mohammed, and Albert Acquah, allegedly robbed Akosua Helena and other travelers of their cellular phones and money at Pampaso amidst the firing of gunshots.
They had just arrived in Kumasi from Accra, at about 0230 hours on Saturday, January 19.
Also being held is Agyemang Duah, caught offering a human skull for sale at Asawasi.
DCOP Gyening said they would be arraigned soon to answer for their crimes.

Sub-Saharan Africa has world’s highest prevalence of hunger – UNDP
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) African Human Development report 2012 says Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence of hunger in the world.
It said until this situation improves, the human development prospects of millions of Africans will remain at risk.
UNDP’s first African Human Development Report which was made available to the Ghana News Agency on Monday shows that food security and human development reinforce each other.
If African countries are to realize their long-term potential, the report says, they must boost agricultural productivity to both improve the availability of food and reduce poverty.
It said policies to enhance nutrition are central to ensuring that access to food translates into human development.
The report said local populations must have the resources and decision-making power to produce and consume nutritious food throughout the year, overcome the risks represented by continuing conflicts, climate change and variations in food prices.
It said these drivers of change, by ending the ravages of hunger and malnourishment, will nurture capabilities and conditions for human development.
The report noted that a well-nourished and empowered population, in turn, is more likely to seek education, participate in society and expand its productive and human potential.
It said with the right policies and institutions, Africa can sustain this virtuous cycle of higher human development and enhanced food security.

Former CPP Chairman commends President Mahama
Professor Edmund N. Delle, the President of Commonwealth Human Rights and Health Promoters, on Monday commended President John Dramani Mahama for making broad-based ministerial nominations.
The appointment of women and men mainly on their merits and capabilities is a hallmark for forming competent government whilst the inclusion of youth, advocates, educationists and socially-exclusive persons by the President, deserves commendation.
A statement to the Ghana News Agency in Accra signed by Prof. Delle, who is also Chief Executive Officer of Rabito Health Service, called on the ministers designate to work around the clock for the benefit of Ghanaians, if their positions are approved by Parliament.
“This is the time for hard work, we expect our ministers to hit the ground running to ensure that Ghana is transformed….the ministers must justify the confidence reposed in them by the president.
“It is a privilege to be identified by the President and assigned a task in the government with oversight responsibility over a ministry,” Prof Delle stated.
Prof Delle also a former Chairman of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), commended the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for using the legal means to address their concern about the Election 2012 Presidential results.
He appealed to the leadership of the NPP and the National Democratic Congress to call their members to order “as we all wait for the outcome of the petition at the Supreme Court.
“We must not allow our supporters to engage in acts with the tendency of disrupting the peace that we have been enjoying, we must keep on dialoguing and avoid confrontations,” he said.
Prof. Delle also commended the media, the security agencies and other stakeholders in the practice of democracy for their contributions in maintaining peace before, during and after the elections.
President Mahama, in accordance with article 78 of the 1992 Constitution, has so far nominated 31 ministers out of which eight are women, and one visually impaired.
They are Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, Minister for Justice and Attorney-General; Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, Minister for Education; Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Mrs. Dzifa Attivor, Minister of Transport.
