Hawkers back to Accra streets after AMA eviction

street-hawkersHawkers are back on the streets of Accra after the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Task Force evicted them on Monday.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to Accra on Wednesday revealed that majority of the traders, especially women, had returned to the streets.

In an interview with some traders to find out their reason for coming back onto the streets, Madam Ama Adorko, said she was back because of her children’s education, saying she was the sole bread winner of her family and could not stay idle.

Akua Nyame, a fish seller,  said AMA was making life unbearable for them and their  children and asked “do they want our children to drop out of school just as ourselves and be a great burden to us”, she added.

Madam Naa Lamptey, a second hand clothes trader, said if she did not work her family was not going to eat because her husband is sick in the house and she is now taking care of the whole family.

GNA noticed that the AMA Task Force personnel were also around seizing goods from traders.

The Task Force told GNA that the decongestion exercise was carried out to ensure free movement of pedestrians on the pavements and pedestrians were seen moving freely on pavements without any hindrances.
