Appeal against CAF’s elections rejected

CAFThe Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS) has rejected an appeal by the Liberia Football Association (LFA) against the Confederation of African Football (CAF), regarding its presidential election.

The LFA was seeking to overturn the motion passed at an Extraordinary General Assembly of CAF in Mahe, Seychelles last September, that allows only members of the CAF Executive Committee to contest for the position of CAF President.

The ruling by international sports arbitration body said: “(CAS) today terminated the appeals procedure initiated by the Liberian FA against the decision of the African Football Confederation (CAF) in relation to the amendment of the CAF Statutes regarding the presidential election.

“The Liberian FA did not comply with the requirements of the CAS regulations as it did not file an appeal brief to confirm its prior statement of appeal.”

The first case by the LFA was similarly dismissed last November, by CAS for failing to go through the internal channels of CAF regarding their petition.

With this, incumbent Issa Hayatou, remains the sole contender for the CAF President position at its election to be held in later in March in Morocco.

The Cameroonian has been at the helm of the continent’s soccer governing body since 1987 and is credited with some innovation in Africa.
