Police to seize motorbikes found 50 metres from polling centres

The Police have said they would seize motorbikes found within 50 metres from polling centres on voting day.

Chief Superintendent Alex Amenyo, the Konongo Divisional Police Commander, said experience from previous elections had shown that persons who engaged in the snatching of ballot boxes almost in all instances used motorbikes to commit the crime.

He was speaking at a workshop organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) with support from the European Union (EU) for youth leaders of the various political parties in the Asante-Akim Central Municipality and the Asante-Akim North District at Agogo.

It was meant to assist them to appreciate the need to ensure the peace during and after the December 7 polls.

Chief Supt Amenyo said it was important for all to share in the responsibility of making the elections peaceful, adding that the police would require the cooperation of the people to execute its duties.

He gave assurance that the police and other security agencies would be firm and professional in the discharge of their mandate.

Mrs. Augustina Akosua Akomanyi, Deputy Commissioner of the NCCE in charge of Programmes, reminded the political parties and their supporters to be guided by the values of fair play and tolerance.

They should respect the “political parties code of conduct”, voluntarily signed.

She urged them not to hesitate to refer grievances to the inter-party dialogue committees for amicable resolution and appealed to the youth not to engage in acts likely to ignite conflict and tear the nation apart.

Mr. Lukas Yiryel, Municipal Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), took the participants through biometric voting process and said the EC had put in place numerous inbuilt mechanisms to make the polls credible.
