Obama nominates new US Africa Command Chief

US President, Barack Obama has nominated a new Army General, David M. Rodriguez to take over as the new commander of the US Africa Command.

David Rodriguez is to succeed the current head of the Africa Command, Army Gen. Carter F. Ham, the US Defense Department announced October 18, 2012.

“The Senate must confirm Rodriguez, who currently is commander of US Army Forces Command at Fort Bragg, N.C,” the Department said in a statement.

Ham has served as the Africa Command chief since March 2011.

Rodriguez is the first US commander of the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command.

The US Africa Command is a combatant command has its headquarters is in Stuttgart, Germany. The command encompasses all of Africa and its adjacent waters except for Egypt.
