Ghanaian university to launch new tablet for learning

Ghana Technology University College (formerly Ghana Telecom University College) together with the Learning Nugget, a UK technology company, would soon launch a 10 tablet (mobile computer), expected to transform teaching and learning in Ghana and West Africa.

The tablet nicknamed “GTUC Campus Companion” (GCC), is expected to cost between $300 and $400.

The device is said to integrate a virtual learning management system, cloud-based multimedia content management application and solutions from Safari Books online and Google applications to provide a comprehensive portfolio of learning sources.

Dr Osei K Darkwa, President of the GTUC, announced this at the College’s 11th Matriculation ceremony held for 587 new students admitted to pursue various diploma and degree level programmes.

He said apart from the basic features, the GCC would enable lecturers to deliver online courses and provide pre-learning, in-learning and post-learning content from preparation through to learning reinforcement.

Dr Osei, who described the GCC as a device that was more advanced than the iPad, added that, the “Campus Companion will also be integrated with aspects of the GTUC administration system”.

“The device will be available to educational institutions and organisational learning academies in Ghana and the sub-region,” he added.

A tablet is larger than a mobile phone or personal digital assistant and is integrated into a flat touch screen and primarily operated by touching the screen rather than using a physical keyboard. It often uses an onscreen virtual keyboard, a passive stylus pen, or a digital pen.

Dr Darkwa said “as a technology-oriented institution, we are mindful of how we employ information technology to promote teaching and learning”.

He said GTUC, formerly known as Ghana Telecom University, had embarked on major physical and technological infrastructural upgrading and development to provide learning space and cutting-edge resources for students.

Dr Darkwa added that the College had rolled out its decentralisation policy by establishing campuses in multiple cities within the country, including Nigeria and Gambia.

He disclosed that management would establish a campus in Takoradi in January 2013.

He urged the new students to apply themselves diligently to hardwork, study and discipline to enable them “to become the professional that they dream to become.”

Dr Darkwa added that “Many of your loved ones have literally sacrificed to enable you to enjoy the privilege of a GTUC education. Honour their sacrifice by behaving responsibly and making the most of this extraordinary opportunity”.
