Ghana to liquidate two state-run water companies

A Twelve-Member Water Sector Restructuring Implementation Committee was on Friday inaugurated in Accra and charged to supervise the re-integration of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) with Ghana Urban Water Limited (GUWL) and its liquidation.

The Committee is also to oversee the overall implementation of the selected option for the reforms of the water sector in consultation with the Transaction Advisor.

Mr Enoch Teye Mensah, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, who conducted the swearing in ceremony in Accra, expressed confidence in the members that they would discharge their duties with excellence.

With the integration, the office of GWCL is expected to play an Asset Holding Authority role and to enter into internally delegated performance contracts with Regional Departments.

The Committee is expected to begin their initial term of operations from October 5th 2012 and end in February 28, 2013.

The concept of restructuring came about when in May 2012, the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing (MWRWH), with the support of the World Bank, obtained the services of Messrs Institutional and Financial Consultants to analyse four options for the management of the urban water sector that had been presented to it.

Consequently, the MWRWH set up an Advisory Committee to review and advise it.

Upon the basis of the review by the Committee, the MWRWH constituted the Implementation Committee to proceed with the implementation of the selected option of an amalgamation of GWCL and GUWL.

Nii Boi Ayibotele, Chairman of the Committee, on behalf of the members, expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged that they would work hard to effectively execute their mandate.

Is 55yrs still cannot get it right and 4yrs still cannot get it right when it comes to basics like water, Hydro, Infrustructure ie RAIL, ROAD , Agriculture, Education, still depending on foreign assistance when Ghana and for that matter Africa will get it right especially Ghana.
A lot of these leaders have the chance to sturdy overseas yet they seems to be the worse of all. Sooner Ghana get right the better the poor people in the country and the next generation will find relief of these headaches. Get all these lazy, ignorant, corrupt bustards out of the system for the right people else all these Resources will finish since they are not renewable.
