Ghana re-opens Kumasi airport

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced that the Kumasi Airport would be re-opened for normal operations from 1400hours on Thursday, October 4.

GACL statement to the Ghana News Agency said the temporary closure of the Kumasi Airport was for remedial works on the runway due to the detection of cracks on the runway at the airport.

The closure drew criticism from some domestic airline operators, with Antrak Air Founder, Alhaji Asuma Banda blaming the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and GACL for allowing heavier aircraft to use the airport and thus causing the defects on the runway.

GACL Deputy Manager however attributed the problem to recent downpours.

“GACL wishes to express its gratitude to the Domestic airlines and the general public for their co-operation and indeed regrets any inconvenience caused as a result of the temporary closure,” the statement said.
