Contribute percentage of Common Fund to District Fire Stations – CFO
The Acting Chief Fire Officer, Brigadier General Guyiri has appealed to Metropolitan and District Assemblies to donate a percentage of the Common Fund to District Fire Stations.
He said the amount would be used for Public Fire Safety Education programmes and also to drill boreholes as an alternative to hydrants to do effective fire fighting in the districts.
The appeal was made when Brig Gen Guyiri met the Western Regional Minister and Metropolitan/District Chief Executives as part of his two-day working visit to the Western Region.
He said since education could affect attitudinal change, it would be proper to engage the communities in fire safety education to ensure that fire statistics are reduced in the communities.
The Western Regional Minister, Mr Evans Paul Aidoo, on his part, lauded the Fire Service in the region for their effective collaboration in emergencies, especially during the recent premix tanker accident, which killed 24 people in the Western Region.
He said the Regional Coordinating Council’s was ready to support the Regional Fire Service to ensure that the people were protected from the ravages of fire.
During the Acting Chief Fire Officer’s interaction with the Metropolitan Chief Executive Capt Kudjoe in Sekondi, he mentioned the need to have fire stations in the newly created Districts and the Metropolitan Authorities. He appealed to the Fire Service to station some of their personnel in these new districts to create fire safety awareness in the communities.
The Acting Chief Fire Officer’s visit took him to the Shama District Assembly, where he inspected a Fire Station under construction. The DCE Mr Enoch Appiah promised to arrange for some air time for fire safety education and also support the District Fire Service Station at all times.
Brig Gen Guyiri also paid a familiarisation visit to The Aboade Thermal Plant of the Volta River Authority, where he interacted with a section of management. An inspection tour was organised for the Chief Fire Officer and his team to see the fire safety facilities at the thermal plant area.
During the second day of his working visit, the Acting Chief Fire Officer visited the Apremdo Fire Station where plans are on the way to establish an ultra-modern fire training facility to upgrade the skills of firemen.
A durbar was held at the Fire Service Regional Headquarter to climax the visit of the Acting Chief Fire Officer, where he had discussions with fire personnel in the Western Region.
