Benin withdraws from WAFU Women’s Tournament

Benin has withdrawn from the West African Zonal Union (WAFU) Zone “B” Tournament forcing organisers to alter the fixtures.

The tournament scheduled for 28 September to 7 October in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire will now have five participants battling for honours.

Information gathered by GNA Sports from the secretariat of the Zonal Union indicates that the Beninois confirmed their withdrawal on Tuesday in a letter to the organisers.

This leaves Group B with Ghana and Senegal as the teams and will face each other twice on September 29 and October 1 both at the Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan.

Hosts Cote d’Ivoire are housed in Group A alongside Liberia and Mali.

The championship, which has seen several deferrals in the past is geared towards the development of women’s football in the zone.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Black Queens left on Tuesday for Abidjan to participate in the championship.
