University of Cape Coast admits 4,818 fresher students

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has admitted 4,818 fresh students out of the 10,492 qualified applicants.

On the admission list, 1,749, representing 36 per cent of the total intake are females, an increase of 43 per cent over last year’s intake of female students.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice-Chancellor of the UCC, announced these at the university’s matriculation ceremony on Saturday in Cape Coast.

She said the total number of students enrolled this year, represented 18.3 per cent increase over last year’s figure of 4,437.

Prof. Opoku-Agyuemeng said the number of post graduate students intake this year, was 430, of which 139 were females and 294, males.

She said the fresh students were from the faculties of Arts, Education, Social Sciences and Schools of Physical Sciences, Agriculture, Biological Sciences, Business, Medical Sciences as well as the School of Graduate Studies and Research.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the UCC would continue to pursue its objective of making its students holistic individuals, capable of upholding reason at all times, to be able to apply their analytical minds to critically examine issues.

She said the growing tendency of ethnic, political and religious intolerance should have no place in an institution of higher learning. but rather people should be able to freely express their opinions and respect divergent views.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the university has put in place a lot of facilities to enable students to compete globally, and mentioned well-equipped library and Information and Communication Technology centre with internet, science laboratories and resources for visually impaired and physically challenged students.

She asked the fresh students to study hard and conform to all statutes, rules and regulations of the UCC.

The fresh students swore an oath to be loyal members of the university, and also to study diligently and conform to all statutes rules and regulations of the school.
