The police intercepted the truck with 3400 compressed slabs, stuffed in fertilizer bags in the vehicle between Tinga and Banda Nkwanta road in the Northern Region.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) George Tuffour, Northern Regional Police Commander, told journalists at Tamale that on September 12, 2012, at about 2330 hours, the 36-year-old driver of the vehicle, Mr Abu Sumaila, and Mr Kwabena Boataleba, 45, were stopped for routine search.
He said the police found the dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp in the vehicle and arrested the suspects.
“During interrogation, the suspects mentioned one Ibrahim Adam, age 44, a native of Techiman, as the owner of the goods. The suspect called Adams and informed him of the arrest”, DCOP Tuffour explained.
The Police Commander said Adams came to the location and confirmed ownership of the goods and wanted to bribe the police with CFA 1,400 and GHc 430.00, which was turned down.
