The Shama District Assembly has disbursed GH¢147, 60 to 168 disabled persons in the District, the amount  being part of the 2% allocation of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund to People Living with Disability (PLWDs) in the District.

The District Chief Executive, Mr. Enoch Kojo Appiah, said this at a seminar for Assembly members, Heads of Department and members of the Ghana Federation for Disabled (GFD) in Shama on Thursday.

The Local Government and Decentralizations Programme and United States Agency for International Development  funded the event for all metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the Region.

He said so far GH¢200,126.30 had been credited to the GDF’s account in the District and pledged the commitment of the Assembly to support disabled persons in the area.

Mr. Appiah urged members of GFD to acquire employable skills in order to live meaningful lives saying, “You should not see disability as a curse, but learn entrepreneurial skills to make you financially independent and lead worthwhile lives”.

The Executive Director of GFD, Madam Kyeremaa Kusi, appealed to the government to provide sign language translators at health facilities across the country as well as set up Disability Desks at relevant institutions to facilitate participation of disabled persons in governance.
