Ghana to play Benin in CHAN 2014 qualifiers

Ghana will face Benin in the qualifiers of the 2014 African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for South Africa.

The local Black Stars were drawn against Les Ecureuils during the draw of the tournament designed exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues, held on Thursday at the headquarters of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo, Egypt.

Ghana will pitch their strength against the Beninois for one of the three slots allotted Zone West ‘B’ for the 16-team tournament.

Benin will host the first leg on the weekend of 21-23 June, 2013 with the return leg billed for the weekend of 5-7 July, 2013 in Accra. The winner of the tie qualifies for the third edition of the tournament, and also the first to be held in an odd year.

Ghana has participated in the previous two editions of the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire (2009) and Sudan (2011).

The local Black Stars were runners-up at the maiden edition in Cote d’Ivoire before exiting the group stage of the last edition.
