No change in water, power tariffs – PURC

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) announced on Tuesday that there would be no change in electricity and water tariffs for the third quarter, which spans the period September to November.

A statement signed by Dr Emmanuel Andah, Acting Chairman PURC, said the decision followed a review for electricity and water tariffs for the third quarter under the automatic adjustment formula.

The automatic adjustment formula allows tariff to be adjusted periodically taking into account the foreign exchange rate, the current trend of crude oil prices on the international market, the cost of generating and producing electricity and water, among other things.

In view of the current load shedding necessitated by a significant shortfall in gas supplies for generation of electricity, the PURC is encouraging consumers dissatisfied with the way the exercise is being handled by the utility providers to report to them or the Commission for immediate redress.

The Commission assured consumers and major stakeholders that measures were being put in place to strengthen its complaints handling and resolution processes to ensure that complaints received by the Commission from consumers are resolved satisfactorily.

The statement said the Commission was going to intensify its monitoring activities to ensure that the impact of the current situation on consumers was minimized.
