Acute water shortage hits Devtraco estate in Tema

Mr Kwaku Botwe, Managing Director of Ghana Water Company, on Monday assured residents of Devtraco Estate, near Tema, that the company was committed to resolving the water problem at the estates.

He said the Company had started a project, which would soon be completed to enable the residents to enjoy a reliable flow of water, however, the GWSC would put in place immediate measures to ensure that they get water at least twice or once a week till the project was complete.

He said it was the responsibility of GWC to provide water to every community in spite of the operational challenges and assured the residents of the Company’s commitment to provide a lasting solution to their problem.

Mr Botwe said this at a media conference to address the concerns of the residents who over the years have not had water flowing through their taps.

He called for effective collaboration with the residents and the Devtraco Limited to work together to solve the water problem amicably.

Mr Seth Adu, Managing Director of Devtraco Limited, also outlined measures adopted to resolve the problem, which included construction of boreholes, and appealed to the residents to be patient while the problem was resolved.

Residents of Devtraco Estate over the years have expressed dissatisfaction about the acute water shortage in the area and blamed the developer, Devtraco Limited and GWC, for denying them access to water even though they had paid huge sums of money to the developer towards the provision of water.

For over four months now, residents have not had water running through their taps that has made the area a “money centre” for water tankers and a site where women, children and men are often cited with containers in search of water.

According to the residents, they buy a tanker of water for about GHC 120 almost every week, describing that water ‘as not good for consumption.’

Water was never a problem to the residents of Devtraco until April when they started experiencing acute water shortage.
