Security personnel must be assertive, firm at polling stations – EC

Mr Selorm Dogbey, Deputy Volta Regional Director of the Electoral Commission on Friday urged security personnel to be assertive and firm at polling stations on Election Day.

This is because “the little fears you entertain or favour you give can affect the credibility of the Polls and cause confusion.”

He urged security personnel to maintain their neutrality and desist from taking “unlawful’ instructions from politicians.

Mr Dogbey gave the advice when he addressed personnel of security services in the Volta Region at the 66 Artillery Regiment (Volta Barracks) to mark this year’s “Exercise Bridget” of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Mr Dogbey advised them to be proactive, approachable and “proportional” in the use of force in order not to cause mayhem at the polling stations.

Commodore Mawuli Biekro, Chief of Staff of the GAF urged security personnel to eschew indiscipline ahead of the December Polls and live up to the trust and confidence Ghanaians have in them.

Brigadier General Daniel Mishio, Director of Joint Operations and Plans of the GAF said the military had already drawn a contingency plan for the December Polls.

He said vehicles with communication gadgets had been ordered and assured of adequate preparations towards meeting the logistical needs of every soldier.

Mr Alex Bedie, Volta Regional Police Commander was hopeful that this year’s elections would be the most peaceful.

Mr Henry Ford Kamel Volta Regional Minister commended security services in the Region for helping to restore peace at Hohoe and encouraged them to remain united and professional during the December Polls.

Lieutenant Colonel Seidu Abass, Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment said “Exercise Bridget” was an interactive forum meant to build a united front of all security services ahead of the Polls.

Personnel of the services are expected to engage in games as part of “Exercise Bridget”.
