Legon Hall clocks 60 years
The Legon Hall of the University of Ghana, on Wednesday launched its 60th Anniversary with an invitation of its alumni to participate in all activities earmarked for the celebration and to donate financially to programme .
The Hall, the Premier Hall of the university, was the first permanent residential building to be inaugurated by the then University of Gold Coast, now University of Ghana.
Speaking at the launch in Accra on Wednesday, Professor David Atta –Peters, Hall Master, noted that the Hall had produced many prominent persons, contributing their quota towards development in and outside Ghana.
He said: “Our role call include the late President John Evans Atta Mills, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Edwward Mahama, a former flagbearer of the Peoples National Convention among others”.
The celebration which is slated for September 1st to 30th 2012 is on the theme: “Legon Hall at 60: Contributing to National Development”.
Prof. Atta –Peters expressed his appreciation to people like Mr John Henry Mensah, a former Senior Minister in the Ex-President John Agyekum Kufour’s Administration, and Professor Adzei Bekoe, former Vice Chancellor, University of Ghana, who volunteered to come into residence in Legon Hall in 1951 when the Hall had not been completed.
Prof Atta-Peters said the Hall admitted its first female students in the 1992-1993 academic year, when the female student population of the University had increased.
“This called for the decongestion of the hall, which now has three students per room since the beginning of the current academic year with 1,206 students in residence to help create congenial atmosphere for learning and improved sanitation”.
He appealed to the Ghana Water Company to increase water supply to the Hall to forestall its perennial water crisis.
Activities earmarked for the celebration include seminars, public lectures, ladies’ day, gentlemen’s day, homecoming, dinner dance, fundraising and awards night and thanksgiving service.
