MTN admits decline to 51% in market share after Globacom entry

MTN Ghana’s market share has declined to 51 per cent following the entry of Globacom into the Ghanaian mobile telecoms sector.

MTN Group of South Africa, the mother company of MTN Ghana stated in its 2012 half year financial results released Wednesday August 8, 2012 – ‘MTN Ghana’s market share declined to 51% during the half year and this was “as a result of the entry of a new mobile player into the market.”’

Nigeria telecoms operator Globacom started operations in Ghana on April 29, 2012, becoming the sixth mobile operator in the country.

As at June 2012 the mobile provider has increased its subscriber base to 990,566 representing 4% of the total market share, according to data from the National Communications Authority.

MTN has a subscriber base of 10,757,974 representing 46% of the total market share, it says.
