MTN’s mobile money subscribers hit 2 million

MTN, the leading telecommunication company in Ghana, has launched August as the Mobile Money Month to recruit 10,000 new subscribers to patronise the service across the country.

The month long programme on the theme: “MTN Mobile Money Creating a Cashless Economy with Your Mobile Phone”.

Mr Michael Ikpoki, Chief Executive Officer of MTN, who launched the programmeon Thursday, said the theme for the event would help provide a solid base to begin a major step for the country towards growing a cashless economy.

He said since the company launched the Mobile Money Service in 2009, it had registered about two million people who were enjoying the convenience of transacting business without cash.

“It has been MTN’s goal to bring Mobile Money to the masses in order to enrich the lives of our many subscribers,” he said.

He expressed the hope that by the end of the programme more people would know the benefit of the service and be hooked for transaction and significantly improve business.

Mr Ikpoki encouraged the staff to show more interest in the event and urged them to entreat their families to use the service.

He said MTN was committed to supporting the economic development of the country, hence the desire to make Ghana a cashless society.

Mr Ikpoki said the company had partnered banks including Access Bank, Merchant Bank, GT Bank, Agricultural Development Bank; Cal Bank, Ecobank, UBA, Stanbic Bank and Fidelity Bank to provide adequate services to its subscribers.

Mr Ebenezer Asante, Sale and Distribution Executive of MTN, said the celebration was also to increase the transaction volume of existing Mobile Money subscribers by 10 per cent.

He said it was to influence policy decision in favour of a cashless economy, and that the company would hold a roundtable discussion on Friday, August 3, on the topic “Building a Cashless Economy in Ghana.”

Mr Asante said subscribers could now use the service to pay their DSTV bills, school fees from the senior high to the tertiary level and for insurance purposes.

Subscribers could also use the Mobile Money to shop at some selected super markets and partner restaurants.
