Parliament to scrutinize $13m loan for Army to carry out duties during 2012 elections

Parliament is expected to, on Wednesday, approve through a resolution a medium term loan facility between the government of Ghana and CAL Bank Limited for an amount of $13,921,750.00 and €3,484,457.58 to finance the procurement of vehicles and communication equipment for the Ghana Armed Forces to carry out duties related to the 2012 elections.

The motions for the approval of these loans are contained in the provisional line up of Wednesday’s business transaction in the house even as the MPs carry out light business this week in keeping with the general mood of a nation still mourning the Late President John Atta Mills.

The House had to suspend sittings today to make a brief visit to the private residence of the late president to mourn with the wife, Mrs Naadu Mills. The MPs will reconvene late afternoon to observe a minute’s silence at 2.15 pm for the late president.

Meanwhile, before the House goes on recess, it is expected to scrutinize a number of loans before the joint committees of Finance and Health. These include the agreement between government and Stanbic Bank for an amount of €15,800,000.00 for the purchase of 200 ambulances for the National Ambulance Service.

Others are the loan agreement between the government and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) for an amount of $8 million for the co-financing of the Trauma and Acute Care Centre at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
