Berekum Chelsea coach admits weakness in team’s defence

Hans Vander Plyum, head coach of Berekum Chelsea, the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Champions League campaigners, has conceded that his team’s major weakness is in the defence, having conceded four goals in two matches of the competition.

The coach, however, added that he will work on the weakness before they embark on the remaining matches in the competition.

Chelsea has so far conceded four goals in two matches with the defensive system widely blamed for the four goals.

Speaking to the media on the team’s arrival from Lubumbashi, DR Congo after their drawn match against TP Mazembe, at the Kotoko International Airport on Tuesday, the coach admitted that the defence seem to be battling with inexperience despite playing together for a long time.

Coach Vander Plyum said the technical team will draw up a strategy to deal with the situation as it is one area that can cause the downfall of the team.

Commenting on the task ahead, the coach noted that they are prepared for every opponent, hence will approach their next match against Al Ahly of Egypt with equal attention and seriousness.

“In football, nothing is impossible. We can go to Egypt and pick the three maximum points at stake provided we approach the match with the right tactics and strategy.

“It will be a tough match, but my boys believe in themselves and will rise up to the occasion and deliver on the day” he told the media.

Asked how his side was able to come back from a two goal deficit to draw level, Vander Plyum said, “I have never doubted the ability of my boys to overcome such difficult times and I was not bothered even though we were down. I knew we were going to come back strongly and so I was not surprised we cancelled the two goals.

“It was a tough match but we were well focused and that is why we came back to score two goals in the second half of the game”. The coach stated.

Chelsea, currently placed second with four points in group B, will travel to Egypt early next month to play Al Ahly in the final group game of the first round of the competition.
