Voters register to be published online – EC

Dr. Afari-Gyan – EC Boss

The voters register is to be published online as part of the process to ensure transparency.

The Chainnan of the EC, Dr Kwadwo AfariGyan, who made this known noted that it was also the intention of the EC to publish polling station results online after elections.

The EC boss said this yesterday when the commission opened its doors to representatives of political parties from the Ashanti and Volta regions to offer them the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the operations of the EC.

The event, which was on the theme: “The Inbuilt Integrity of Ghana’s Electoral Process, was attended by representatives of the National D.emocratic Congress (NDC),the New Patriotic Party (NPP), United Front Party (UFP), People’s National Convention (PNC), Convention People’s Party (CPP), New Vision Party (NVP), Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and the Independent People’s Party (IPP).

During a tour of the EC, the representatives were given unhindered access to the Information Technology (IT) Department, where data is collated and kept as well as the Operations Room, otherwise known as the Strong Room.

Responding to a wide range of questions after the tour, Dr Afari-Gyan said there would be transfer of votes this year, and that the practice would be allowed about six weeks to the elections.

He said for instance, it was unfair to prevent someone who had been transferred from Accra to Bolga from transferring his or her vote.

He warned that the EC would cancel the results of a polling station if ballot papers exceeded the number of people on the voters register.

Dr Afari-Gyan said it was important for party representatives at the polling station to sign the results at that level, else “you would be signing your death warrant”.
