Presbyterian Church of Ghana to hold 12th General Assembly at Abetifi

The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) will organise its 12th General Assembly, on the theme: “The Gifts, of the Holy Spirit in the Church Today” at the Ramseyer Chapel, Abetifi Kwahu in the Eastern Region from August 17 to 23.

The Assembly, which is the highest decision making body of the Church, is expected to attract about 600 commissioners, and corresponding members from all the 16 Presbyteries, overseas mission and partners from local and foreign to draw a missionary agenda for the new ecclesiastical year.

A statement issued in Accra on Friday by Mr Emmanuel Osei Akyeampong, Public Relations Officer, copied to Ghana News Agency said major highlights of the event would include the official opening, divine service, service to commemorate the faithful departed, business sessions and the election of a new Clerk of General Assembly for the church to succeed the incumbent Reverend Herbert Anim Opong whose tenure comes to an end on December 1, 2012.

It is the highest decision making body of PCG and consists of commissioners elected by presbyteries.

Half of the commissioners are Ministers of Word and Sacrament, half Elders and few ever have been commissioners to the General Assembly before, but most will have served in one of the other governing bodies of the church: the session, which provides care and oversight of a local congregation; the Presbytery, which provides care and oversight of a group of congregations; or the synod which provides care and oversight of several presbyteries.

It reviews the work of synods, resolves controversies in the church, is responsible for matters of common concern for the whole church, and serves as a symbol of unity for the church.

Furthermore, the assembly seeks to protect the church from errors in faith and practice, is responsible for assuring that the expression of the Presbyterian Theology remains true to the biblical standards in historic confessions.

It presents a witness for truth and justice in the community, sets priorities for the church and establishes relationships with other churches or ecumenical bodies.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Right Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, would preside over the Assembly.

Candidates nominated for election to the position of Clerk of General Assembly who are to be vetted are Rev. Dr. Samuel Ayetey Nyampong, Akuapim Presbytery Chairperson, Rev. Dr. Solomon Sule-Saa, Director, ESR, PCG, Rev. Dr. Brandford Yeboah, Minister –in-charge, PCG, Tesaso, Rev. C.B. Ocloo, Director, Ramseyer Training Centre, Abetifi Kwahu and Rev. Ernest Odame Asare, District Minister, Asante Mampong, PCG).

Members of the Church and the entire Christian Community in the country are urged to pray for the Assembly.
