World Vision inaugurates Committees in areas of operations

World Vision, a non-governmental organization (NGO), has inaugurated Area Development Programme (ADP) Committees in its areas of operation, to continue with projects of the NGO.

The committee members include chiefs, Assembly Members, leaders of women groups and the youth.

Madam Benedicta Pealore,  the Operation Base Team Leader World Vision in charge of  Upper East, said  these when she unveiled  a new project dubbed: “Farmer Managed and Natural Regeneration FMNR,” at separate functions  at the Kassena–Nankana West, Bawku West and the Garu-Tempane Districts in the Region.

She explained that unlike some of the NGOs that build projects for Communities, World Vision empower community members to undertake projects they had initiated.

Madam Pealore explained that the committees were formed to help the people own the projects, and to ensure their sustainability after World Vision withdraws its support.

She expressed concern that interventions made by Government and NGOs at minimizing environmental degradation had failed and said the application of the FMNR  was best in tackling the problem.

Madam Pealore said: ”The FMNR has been tested  in the Talensi Nabdam District in this region, Niger, Ethiopia and Chad and others and it has worked perfectly and improved upon the livelihoods of the people. Women easily get firewood, there is abundant fodder for animals and   soils have become fertile and rainfall also increased”.

She said under the FMNR, no trees were planted, but farmers select stumps and shrubs of trees that grow naturally and prunes them, using simple tools such as axe, sickles and machetes, and they grow into trees within a few years.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Garu-Tempane, Mr David Adakudugu,  in a speech read on his behalf,  said the assembly would support  the FMNR.

The DCE of Kassena-Nankana West,  Mr Thomas Dalu, called on the people support the FMNR.

World Vision, Australia, is supporting the project three districts after it had been successful in the Talensi-Nabdam District.
