ActionAid Ghana celebrate Mother’s Day with alleged witches at Kukuo

ActionAid-Ghana and Songtaba, both non-governmental organizations (NGOs), based in Ghana, on Sunday joined alleged witches at Kukuo witches’ camp in the Northern Region, to celebrated this year’s Mother’s Day.

As part of the celebration, the NGOs re-roofed 25 huts (homes) of some of the 137 alleged witches, which were in a deplorable state, with thatch and wooding rafters.

The witches live in the camp with their 172 children and grand children.

Madam Adwoa Kwateng Kluvitse, Country Director of ActionAid Ghana, called on Government to seek the welfare of witches at the camp, and to take adequate steps to eventually stop the sending of alleged witches to those camps.

She said ActionAid-Ghana had been working hard to improve the living conditions of the alleged witches, and to generate public interest about their human rights violation, since 2005.

The Country Director commended the youth of Kukuo for providing labour for the re-roofing of the huts, contrary to some communities where young people lead the banishment of the witches.
