Sunyani to develop into an eco-city

Prof. Mrs. Esi Awuah, Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) in the Brong-Ahafo Region on Thursday declared that Sunyani would be developed to become an “Eco-City”.

The VC said the University would collaborate with stakeholders, including the Sunyani Municipal Assembly and the Regional Co-ordinating Council (RCC) to ensure the realization of the dream.

Prof. Mrs. Awuah made the declaration on Thursday in a presentation on the theme “Establishment of a Public University in the Brong-Ahafo Region; How far have we gone” at a dialogue session as part of the four-day regional Policy Fair that commenced on Wednesday.

The programme, under the theme “Building Together in a Better Ghana”, is aimed among others at creating the opportunity for the people to seek the right information and interact with policy makers and implementers with the view to enhancing policy formulation and policy review.

Prof. Mrs Awuah said “Sunyani is going to expand because it is opening up in leaps and bounds” and called for proper planning by the authorities to harness its potential for development.

“The University will also initiate and lead a recycling project, as part of the Eco-City initiative, to ensure the recycling of all sorts of waste matter or materials, including plastics and metals, for the socio-economic benefit of the people”, the Vice Chancellor added.

Prof. Mrs. Awuah said the University was already operational and making linkages internationally.

She announced that the University would early next year receive students from the Harvard Business School in the United States of America.

The Fair ended on Saturday with a cultural display and a food bazaar.
