Man shot to death over GH¢5 rice

Tragedy struck Abrokyir Krobo, a farming community near Wassa Akropong when a 53-year-old man, James Kwarteng, shot one Kojo Alex to death.

The Prestea District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Benjamin Wonkyi confirmed the shooting incident to the Ghana News Agency on Monday.

DSP Wonkyi said the wife of the deceased, Ekua Baduwa, sells cooked rice and about a month ago, Yaw Kalaku bought rice on credit amounting to GH¢5.00.

The police said Baduwa had been demanding payment from Kalaku for sometime without success.

He said last Friday, Kalaku came to the neighbourhood of James Kwarteng, his friend, on a visit.

The police said Baduwa saw him and demanded that Kalaku paid the debt.

This degenerated into a quarrel between them and Baduwa called her husband Kojo Alex to listen to the vain excuses given by Kalaku.

DSP Wonkyi said when the exchanges became intense between them, Kojo Alex tried to calm tempers down but without any provocation, James Kwarteng came out from his room with a double barreled gun and shot Kojo Alex to death.

DSP Wonkyi said the shooting attracted a number of people who subjected Kwarteng to merciless beatings until he fell unconscious and was rescued by the police.

The police said when Kwarteng recovered from the injuries he would be put before court.
