Rainstorm destroys houses in Navrongo, Paga

Rainstorm destroyed a number of houses on Friday night in Navrongo and Paga in the Kassena-Nankana East and West Districts of the Upper East Region.

The storm started after 1800 hours came with severe winds travelling at a speed of about 150 miles per hour.

Roofs of houses at the ICOUR block in Navrongo were ripped off compelling inhabitants to move to nearby houses.

Namolo nursery, primary and junior high schools which house about 500 pupils had its roof ripped off with major electrical polls also pulled down.

Mr Mark Woyongo, Regional Minister went round the Navrongo Township with members of the Red Cross and officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to inspect some of the affected homes.

He expressed his sympathy to the affected people and assured them of government readiness to help them with relief items.

The squall also affected portions of the Navrongo campus of the University for Development Studies. The roof of ECOWAS Male Hall accommodating about 44 students was ripped off.

Mr Alfred Marfo, an occupant of the hall described the incident as terrible.

The storm also affected Navrongo Senior High School were four dormitory blocks, two classroom blocks and seven staff bungalows had their roofs ripped off.

No casualties were recorded.
