Sunyani Municipal Assembly raises GH¢700,331 in 2011 as internally generated revenue

Sunyani Municipal Assembly bagged a total of GH¢700,331.00 as internally generated revenue out of a projected GH¢710,283.75 in 2011, representing 98.6 per cent performance.

Mr. Kwasi Oppong Ababio, Municipal Chief Executive, disclosed this in a sessional address on Wednesday at the first ordinary meeting of the Assembly.

He said measures had been put in place to further improve the performance and mentioned there would be effective training of revenue officers for revenue collection.

An automated revenue billing section has been created to deal exclusively with rate payer bills and related issues, he added, and mentioned that the monitoring and evaluation of revenue collectors and collection had also been strengthened.

The MCE announced that the Assembly in collaboration with the Municipal Health Directorate was implementing the National Malaria Control Programme in the municipality to provide free insecticide treated nets to all stakeholders and that the Assembly had contributed GHc2000 towards the programme.

Mr Oppong Ababio announced community libraries would be established to encourage students to cultivate the habit of reading.

He said management of the Assembly had had discussions with some Professors of Michigan Technology University in the United States of America who had mobilized resources and procured some books and computers to be donated to some libraries in the municipality.

Arrangements were almost through for the items to be shipped to Ghana in July this year to help pupils in basic schools to develop reading skills, the MCE added.

Mr Oppong Ababio stated the University had also selected the Municipality and Sunyani West District as study areas for exchange programmes for their students.

He asked the Assembly Members to eschew negative practices and actions that could thwart efforts in achieving developmental goals.

The MCE urged all to put their shoulders to the wheel of development so that future generations would appreciate the municipality’s effort and that of the nation in general.

Mr Oppong Ababio commended the staff of the Assembly and the area council for their hard-work and commitment to work, which helped the Assembly to perform remarkably last year.
