145 children died in Tema in 2011 – Official

A total of 145 children died in the Tema Metropolis last year, as against 78 deaths recorded in 2010, showing an increase of 67.

Mrs. Hannah Twumasi-Ankrah, Tema Metropolitan Births and Deaths Registrar, who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Friday, said most of the children died of malaria and anaemia, and that 81 of the deaths were males, while the rest were females.

Mrs Twumasi-Ankrah said the ages of the children ranged between one and 14 years.

She indicated that her outfit, consisting of five offices and 33 outreach centres, recorded a total of 15,223 births, made up of 10,580 new births and 4,643 late births.

Mrs. Twumasi-Ankrah added that while the new births consisted of 5,486 males and 5,094 females that of the late births was made up of 2,727 and 1,916 males and females respectively.
