Armed robbers raid KNUST supermarket

An armed robbery gang on Thursday night raided a supermarket at the Unity Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and shot a student in the head.

The victim, identified as Maame Esi, is now receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

The mask-wearing robbers escaped with a number of seized cellular phones and cash amidst firing of gunshots.

No arrest has been made by the police.

An eyewitness, Emmanuel Agyapong who sells electrical appliances just at the entrance of the canteen, told the Ghana News Agency that the incident occurred at about 2030 hours, just after the metropolis had been buffeted by a heavy rainfall.

He claimed to have been the first person they robbed before attacking the canteen and the Continental (Unity) Supermarket.

Shoppers, he said were ordered to lie down on the floor as members of the gang numbering about seven took away their cellular phones and cash.

The University Council on Friday morning met for several hours with the police and the military over the incident.

Meanwhile, the injured student is reported to be in a stable condition.
