Ghana Revenue Authority intercept GH¢27,000 worth of smuggled goods

Brong-Ahafo Regional Mobile Patrol team of the Customs division of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) last Friday intercepted smuggled goods with an estimated value of GH¢27,000 on the Techiman-Kintampo highway.

The goods, with a duty element of about GH¢12,000, included more than 1,550 pieces of imitated wax print, 250 pieces of curtain materials, three boxes of fine cigarettes, eight boxes of viahagoa (banned aphrodisiac), seven pieces of heavy-duty car batteries and 10 pieces of decoder and accessories.

Briefing the press in Sunyani on Wednesday, Assistant Commissioner Isaac Desmond Tettey-Dzan Abbey, Brong-Ahafo Regional Sector Commander, said the goods were intercepted by the patrol team upon a tip off on a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number GT 9307 H.

He said the driver bolted together with other occupants of the vehicle upon the approach of the patrol team, leaving the vehicle and the items behind.

The sector commander paid tribute to the general public for offering information, as well as the staff for the good work done, saying the division would “not leave any stone unturned” and would keep on raking in revenue for the state”.

Mr. Mohammed Mustapha Iddrisu, preventive officer in-charge, appealed to the public to voluntarily assist the patrol team with information to control the illegal activity.

He said the efforts of such volunteers would be financially rewarded for any arrest made.

Mr. Iddrisu cautioned importers and “other miscreants” to desist from smuggling goods into the country since it contravened section 251 of PNDCL 330 of 1993 punishable by fine, imprisonment or both if caught.
