Work on UCC’s GH¢10m training and resource centre begins

The Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) on Thursday cut the sod for work to begin on a training and resource centre at Agona Nyarkrom.

The GH¢10-million Centre is to help advance UCC’s vision of bringing higher education to the doorsteps of Ghanaians irrespective of their areas of abode.

The project, which is expected to be completed within three years, will serve as the Central Regional training and resource centre and a satellite campus to UCC.

Mr Albert Koomson, the Director for CCE, said the Centre would not only provide the platform for people to further their studies, but also be a source of employment for both the skilled and unskilled labour force in the Nyarkrom community.

About 32,000 people across the country are currently undertaking the UCC’s Distance Education Programme of which not less than 25 qualified Chartered Accountants are produced every year.

Mr Koomson said it was also the Centre’s vision to ensure that the project lured other investors and helped to promote a good business environment for the people of Agona.

Mr Koomson said similar centres would be replicated in all the ten regions of the country.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Vice Chancellor of UCC, who cut the sod, said quality education was important to the growth of the nation.

She said the UCC would continue to explore more avenues for a greater percentage of the population to gain access to higher education.

Professor Agyeman expressed her gratitude to the Omanhene of Agona Nyarkrom Traditional Area, Okofo Katakyi Nyarko Eku X and his people for readily releasing the land for the project and encouraged the people to make education their priority.

The Omanhene of Agona Nyarkrom also expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor of UCC for the project, saying it would help the area to become vibrant with economic and social activities.

He appealed to parents to give their wards the best of education so that they could proceed to the highest level to fight for the best for Agonaman.
