Embrace community based health concept – Dr Avotri

Dr Teddy Avotri, Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Director of Health, on Wednesday called on communities to embrace the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) to enable them have easy access to health care.

He made the call at the opening session of a two-day training workshop on the CHPS at Takoradi.

About 70 participants including the staff of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Ghana Education Service as well as assembly members, traditional authorities, representatives of the media and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) are attending the workshop.

Dr Avotri appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to facilitate the establishment of CHPS to help provide health care services in their areas

He said the CHPS could provide the platform for communities to identify their health problems and help address them.

Dr Avotri said the concept could reduce the incidence of diseases in communities and particularly reduce maternal and infant mortality adding that the workshop had been organized to explain the CHPS, which is a national policy and rally grassroots support.

Dr Korshie Nazzar, Public Health Specialist at the GHS, who was a facilitator at the workshop, said the concept was an effective means of taking health care to areas that were lacking health care.

He said the CHPS could assist to provide timely information on health issues to safeguard the health of the people.
