Ghana government presents solar powered scooters to Persons With Disability

The Ghana Ministry of Energy in line with it’s policy of integrating renewable energy into the country’s energy mix has presented solar powered scooters to Persons With Disability (PWD).

A statement from the Communications Office of the Ministry said the equipment was highly disabled friendly innovations which run on solar energy to guarantee an inexhaustible battery power, shade and comfort for users.

The solar powered scooter was designed by an Engineer from Elecnor, a Spanish Solar Technology company, which is currently undertaking the provision of Solar Powered Technologies in Island communities not connected to the National Grid with funding provided by the Spanish Government.

The statement said each retrofitting of the solar scooters, one of which was donated by the Deputy Minister of Energy and the other redesigned to suit the purposes of being powered by Solar Energy, cost two thousand Ghana Cedis.

Dr. Joe Oteng Adjei, Minister of Energy, who presented the scooters urged corporate Ghana to assist in providing relief to the poor and vulnerable in society.

He, however, admitted that such innovation helped to build local capacity and created jobs.

Two beneficiaries who could not hide their joy, expressed appreciation to the Government for the kind gesture but like Oliver twist, they called for more support to the disabled community.
