Tema Development Corporation given 5-day ultimatum to stop EOCO from encroachment

The Tema Regional branch of the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union, has given the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) a five-day ultimatum to initiate action to restrain encroachers on the union’s land in Tema.

In a resolution passed by the Tema Regional Council of the ICU at an emergency meeting in Tema on Monday, members alleged that TDC had released to the Regional branch of the Economic and Organised Crime Office EOCO), a parcel of land the Union legally acquired near Community Two, and popularly called Tema Industrial Recreational Area (TIRA).

The ICU explained that on Thursday January 12, EOCO unlawfully entered the land in question which was legally and genuinely acquired through contributions from the toil and sweat of members, and attempted to construct a structure on it.

The Union alleged that prior to the illegal construction EOCO embarked upon, it destroyed 10 pieces of fence pillars, and conveyed sand and blocks to the site to execute its unapproved plan.

The ICU said upon a report to the Tema District Police Commander at Community One, the two parties were invited by the Police Commander to appear before him on Friday, January 13.

The Union alleged that EOCO reneged to pay heed to the Police Commander’s advice to exercise restraint until the matter was resolved amicably, but rather continued to carry more building materials to the site.

The ICU said members reserved the right to advise themselves appropriately, if the Corporation failed to address their concerns by Friday, January 20.

Mr. Morgan Ayawine, Acting Deputy General Secretary of ICU in charge of Operations, who was present at the meeting, assured members of the unflinching support of the national executives, and said it would determine the next line of action if the TDC failed to meet the deadline.
