Court fines five environmental offenders

Five mechanics and two women were fined a total of GH¢580.00 by Ajumako District Magistrate’s Court for operating under unhealthy environment.

John Nyarko; 41, Abraham Sackey; 43, John Baidoo; 35, Kobena Ebo, 28 and Kwesi Atta, 27  and Esi Mame and Abena Mansa also pleaded guilty to showing disrespect to public officials and use of offensive dialect.

Mr Charles Amuako, Assistant Chief Environmental Officer (Saman Saman) at Ajumako told the court that he and his team had visited and advised the convicts a number of times on the need to keep their environment clean and to desilt their gutters to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes, but the advice fell on deaf ears.

He said during the usual rounds of the team on January 9, this year the convicts were  summoned to appear in court but they failed to do so.

A bench warrant was issued for their arrest and they were arraigned on January 13.

The presiding Magistrate, Madam Patience Ablorh advised the accused and the public not to see sanitary inspectors as enemies but as agents of good health-related activities who must be given the due respect.
