Ghana amateur boxers, coaches slammed for abysmal performance

Mr Ray Quarcoo, President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF) has slammed boxing coaches and boxers as well for the recent abysmal performance of members of the National Amateur boxing Black Bombers.

The frustrated GABF boss said though he has managed to secure several opportunities for the boxers including corporate sponsorship and training opportunities outside the country, the boxers have failed to utilize the opportunity.

Quarcoo, it would be recalled has since last year arranged training tours for the team in Australia, Azerbaijan, Nigeria and recently to Pakistan, in a bid to sharpen their skills and grant them international as well as expose them to the modern trend and techniques  in the  sport.

Speaking in an interview with the GNA Sports, Quarcoo said “We are doing everything possible to give the sport a phase lift but the results are not good enough. “We arranged several travels for the team to give them the needed exposure yet they don’t seem to pull their weights”.

The GABF said, “I believe the problem is technical, so I have made a request for a Cuban trainer but the request is not forthcoming, we need change, and that is what some members of the boxing fraternity don’t seem to understand.

The new coach will help us embark on a talent search by moving into the regions to hunt for more talents.

Ghana is yet to secure qualification for Amateur boxing for the next Olympic Games in London, later in the year. This follows the failure of the amateur team in several qualifying competitions so far.

The boxers will have the last opportunity in Morocco to search for slots at the global sports event.
