Top army commander urges recruits to be focused and strong
Brigadier General Dela Johnson Sakyi, Commander of Army Combat Training School, has urged recruits of the Basic Infantry Training Course (BITC2/2011) not to surrender in the face of difficulties but to remain focused and strong.
He told them that the Ghana Army expected them to rise beyond personal considerations and put Ghana first and foremost.
“Do not dampen the expectations of your families or dash the high hopes of Ghanaians by engaging in activities detrimental to your own honour of the State,” Brig-Gen. Sakyi cautioned.
He made the call when Reviewing the passing out parade of BITC 2/2011 made up of 445 recruits including 57 women with the Armed Forces Central Band in attendance at the Army Recruit Training School at Shai Hills.
Brig-Gen. Sakyi warned them not to see their new career as an opportunity to constitute themselves into unauthorised law enforcement agencies on any occasion, or be driven by illegitimate passion for money.
He advised them to be law-abiding, faithful and loyal to their motherland and grow steadily in their career.
Recruit Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Adamu Abdul Rasheed emerged as the overall best recruit with recruit Warrant Officer Class Two (WOII), Boateng Ernestina, picking the all-round best female recruit.
Recruit WOII, Dorcas Sam-Mensah, distinguished herself as the best in drill.
The award winners took home cash prizes ranging from GH₵150 to GH₵500 with insurance policies and leadership books donated by Provident Life Assurance Limited.
A statement issued in Accra on Tuesday by Lieutenant Colonel E. Aggrey-Quashie said the training was carefully packaged in a manner that would develop in the recruits, qualities that would enable them to function effectively as professional soldiers.
They received tuition in junior leadership, military history, drill, physical training, weapon handling and marksmanship. Other dsciplines were minor tactics, fieldcraft, first aid and map reading.
All the recruits took the Oath of Attestation from the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel William Agyapong and pledged to defend the Constitution and bear true allegiance to the land.
