Six commercial drivers fined GH¢1,440

Six commercial drivers have been fined a total of GH¢1,440 or in default two months imprisonment each in hard labour for tempering with the back brakes of their vehicles by a Tarkwa Circuit Court.

The accused drivers pleaded guilty.

Chief Inspector Florence Tawiah told the court presided over by Mr Samuel Obeng Diawuo that the accused drivers whose ages are between 38 to 40 years were all in charge of Mercedes Benz 207 buses.

They are Andrews Ennin, Kofi Atto, Martain Siaw, Francis Yalley, Kwaku Mensah and John Eduakwa.

Inspector Tawiah said in order to create a serene environment during the Christmas festivities, the Police Divisional Motor Transport and Traffic Unit command in conjunction with the Driver Licensing office and the Road Safety Commission in Tarkwa on December 15 embarked on a joint operation to fish out recalcitrant drivers who were flouting the Road Traffic Act within the municipality.

She said while the team got to Tamso on the Tarkwa Takoradi high way the accused drivers were arrested for tempering with the back brakes of their vehicle which caused the vehicle to malfunction.

The Prosecutor said the accused drivers were arrested and after pointing out their offenses to them they were processed to appear before court.

The judge also ordered during its ruling that the accused drivers should ensure that the brakes of their respective vehicles are put in proper shape stressing that the vehicles should be sent back to DVLA for certification before they get back on road.
