Western Region records 3,736 abortion cases

About 3,736 abortion cases were recorded in the Western Region in 2010, Mr. Frank Ofosu-Asante, the Regional Population Officer, said on Tuesday.

Addressing a meeting of the Regional Population Advisory Committee at Sekondi, he said the figure could be higher because of the low patronage of family planning services in the region.

He said 177 maternal deaths were recorded during the period.

Mr. Asante said about 51,256 pupils in 115 schools benefited from the School Feeding Programme in 2010.
Mr. Asante called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to incorporate population variables in their development plans.

Madam Dora Kyeiwaah, a Deputy Director of Nursing Services, said about 17 per cent of women in the fertility group access family planning services.
