Government does not owe any arrears to NYEP employees – Youth Minister

Kofi Humado - Youth & Sports Minister

Mr Clement Humado, Minister of Youth and Sports, on Thursday said government did not owe employees of the National Youth Employment (NYEP) programme any arrears of salaries and allowances.

He disclosed this when he appeared before the House of Parliament to answer an urgent question on the steps the Ministry had taken to settle all arrears with the NYEP staff.

Mr Humado said he was not adequately prepared to answer questions regarding the number of beneficiaries on the NYEP.

Mr Dominic Nitiwul, Member of Parliament for Bimbilla, questioned if government was not owing any of the beneficiaries of the NYEP and he (Mr Nitiwul) quoted 219,150 as the total number (of beneficiaries).

Mr Humado in reply said the Ministry was not prepared with information concerning the question and would prefer to be rescheduled in future to come and address it appropriately.

When the Minister was pressured further by Papa Owusu Ankoma, Member of Parliament for Sekondi, he said NYEP has 980 staff strength, adding “I hope to give breakdown next time”.

Efforts by some other Parliamentarians to get the Sector Minister to answer the question as to whether employees of the NYEP were staff or not, proved futile.
