Court imposes GH¢1,200 fine on unemployed for pirating

A Kumasi Circuit Court has ordered a 45-year old unemployed to pay a fine of GH¢1,200.00 for pirating some local movies.

Akwasi Agyapong pleaded guilty to the offence.

Police Inspector Kwabena Oduro Boateng told the court presided over by Justice William Boampong that the complainant, the Firm Producers Association of Ghana, became aware that people have been duplicating and selling its movies at a cheaper cost.

It therefore set up a taskforce to track down offenders and bring them to justice.

The prosecution said on October 18th this year at about 1400 hours, members of the task force spotted Agyapong offering for sale some of the association’s pirated movies and arrested him.

Police Inspector Oduro said they seized from him duplicated copies of movies with titles like “Nkrato”, “Ponko abodam”, “King of the Night” and “Obaatan wuo.”

Agyapong admitted the offence in his caution statement.
