NADMO seeks tax rebate to incentivise organisations

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is considering securing a Legislative Instrument which would grant tax rebate as incentive to corporate bodies and institutions that donated to the Organization.

Mr Sylvester Azantilow, Deputy National Co-ordinator of NADMO, who disclosed this to journalists in Accra on Tuesday, expressed the hope that the tax rebate would attract more philanthropic organizations and individuals to donate money and relief items to the Organisation.

He said this when Madam Linda Naa Oyoo Quartey, a philanthropist, donated some items to support the October 27th, 2011 Accra flood victims.

The items presented included clothes, books, shoes and toiletries.

Mr Azantilow said management was optimistic that the Organisation’s drafted bill, currently before the Ministry of Interior, would be passed into law by Parliament.

He added that when the law is passed, the Organisation would be changed into a Service then it could further secure the legislative instrument which could enable it grant tax rebates to organizations.

Mr Azantilow expressed appreciation to Madam Quartey for her kind gesture and called on others to emulate her exemplary generosity.

Madam Quartey said when the flood incident occurred she set up “Project Help Black Wednesday Flood Victims” and used the social network Facebook platform to solicit help to provide relief items to the victims.

“As Christians, I believe it’s our duty to give to those who lack, for in giving, we receive the blessings we pray for. So basically, I am fulfilling my Christian duty,” she said.

Madam Quartey called on Ghanaians to donate to support the victims adding “we can’t always be relying on the Government to help disaster victims, we can’t just sit back and express sorrow at the loss suffered by our own people.”

“Natural disasters can strike anywhere and anytime and when it does, it is up to you and me to come together as a community to do what we can to bring relief to the disaster victims,” she added.
