Gbi- Hanjer Ghana Company Limited to recycle Accra waste
Gbi Hanjer Ghana Limited, a waste management company, would by mid next year, install a 2000 Metric ton per day solid waste recycling plant at Danfa in the Ga East Municipal to recycle Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Greater Accra.
The project would serve as a single point of reference for an Integrated Multi Product Waste Recycle and Resource Recovery Project in the country.
The initiative has come a time when the Abloadjei Land Fill Site is almost full to capacity amidst protests and demonstration in recent past against the Assembly.
The total land size of the site has been reduced from 28 acres to about 11 acres as result of the sale of the land by its owners to developers.
Dr Irfan Furniturewala, Executive Director of Gbi-Hanjer, said the project would be associated with some positive impact on costs, environment and the community. These include the reduction of use of the land for scientific landfill with processed remnant, reduction of financial burden for solid waste disposal on urban and local bodies and the prevention of underground water contamination.
Others include reduction of air pollution, reduction of health problems around the solid waste dumping ground while all products extracted and processed will be eco-friendly.
Dr Furniturewala was speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop on the establishment of a plant to recycle MSW in Accra.
He said his outfit was scrutinizing the project and reviewing the plan but was hopeful that they would commence work by May, 2012.
He called for Governmental support and expressed confidence that the project would provide employment for 1000 Ghanaians.
Mr Aquinas Quansah, Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, commended Gbi Hanjer Ghana Limited for their readiness to fund such an integrated solid waste management project.
He said this was a very good example of private-public partnership and the way forward for waste management in the assemblies towards maintaining clean and hygienic towns and cities.
He appealed for the project to be linked to pilot community and households sorting of refuse for collection for recycling at the plant and expressed the hope that it would ensure good environmental sanitation and improved quality of life of Ghanaians.
Mr Quansah pledged the Ministry’s commitment to deepen policy on recycling to speed-up the shift from open dumping of refuse to recycling so that the country could reap the full benefits of recycling of waste.
Mr. John Kwao Sackey, Municipal Chief Executive of Ga East Municipal Assembly, charged Gbi-Hanjer to use appropriate technologies, investment in equity and best engineering practices to execute the project.
